Amphioni
Introduction
Amphioni is an extremely rare and almost mythical red variety from Epirus, considered one of the hidden treasures of the Greek vineyard. It embodies the wildness and authenticity of the mountainous landscape of Northern Greece, surviving through the decades thanks to the efforts of a few producers to preserve the native biodiversity.
Tasting Notes
Color: Deep purple, almost impenetrable. Aromas: A rich palette of dark fruits (black cherry, plum), framed by notes of spices, black pepper, and sometimes a subtle animal or earthy sensation. Palate: Robust, with sturdy tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is long, leaving a sense of dark chocolate and oak.
Gastronomy
Epirotic Cuisine: Wild boar in the oven, traditional meat pies, and lamb with herbs. Game: Deer or roe deer with rich red sauces. Aged Cheeses: Aged kefalograviera from Epirus or smoked Metsovo cheese (Metsovone).
Terroir
Amphioni is primarily found in the region of Ioannina (Zitsa) and the wider Epirus area. It thrives in limestone and rocky soils, at altitudes often exceeding 600 meters, where the vine struggles with the slopes. The environment is mountainous and continental, with abundant rainfall and cold winters. The significant temperature difference between day and night during the ripening period is the "secret" that allows Amphioni to develop intense color and complex aromas without losing its refreshing acidity.
