Belenes
Introduction
Belenes is one of the lesser-known white wine grape varieties of the Aegean, kept alive through sporadic plantings and historical references. Although its presence today is limited, its official classification in the National Catalogue of Varieties in 2025 underscores its importance as part of the genetic biodiversity of the Greek vineyard, offering an authentic island option for flavor researchers.
Tasting Notes
Although there is not yet an official aromatic "typicality," the Aegean terroirs usually impart citrus, green apple aromas, and a subtle saline minerality to white varieties due to the sea breeze. It primarily produces dry white wines. Vinification in stainless steel tanks with an emphasis on preserving freshness and acidity is considered the most appropriate method to highlight the variety.
Terroir
Its main reference point today is Lesvos, where it is included in the lists of local varieties. Earlier sources locate it on islands of the Southern Aegean, as well as in mainland Greece, specifically in Pylos, Messinia.
