Koutsoumpeli Kokkino
Introduction
Koutsoumpeli Kokkino (Koutsoumpeli Kokkino / Rouge) is the pinkish-reddish morphotype of the rare Koutsoumpeli variety. It is a 'color migrant' of the Ionian, which, despite being called 'red,' actually has a distinctive rosé skin that makes it ideal for producing wines with soft hues and a refined character. Associated with Zakynthos and Western Greece, Koutsoumpeli Kokkino is now a valuable tool for winemakers seeking to revive the traditional Ionian vineyard.
Tasting Notes
Rosé Vinification: This is its most common and successful use. It is often co-vinified with Avgoustiatis in Zakynthos, offering a result with a bright pomegranate color. Aromas: Distinguished by elegant notes of flowers and citrus (citron, bergamot). Palate: It has moderate acidity and a light to medium body. Its single-varietal reds are extremely rare and usually have a 'light' color and mild tannins, reminiscent of the style of French Gris wines.
Gastronomy
Seafood: Ideal for shrimp, crayfish, and lobster pasta. Mediterranean Dishes: Perfectly matches stuffed vegetables, olive oil-based dishes, and summer pasta. Light Meats: Pleasantly accompanies grilled chicken or cold charcuterie dishes.
Terroir
Region: Its historical base is Zakynthos and Northwestern Peloponnese. Terroir: As a genuine Ionian variety, it thrives in coastal, dry-thermal terroirs. It is perfectly adapted to the salinity and Mediterranean climate of the Ionian Islands, maintaining its resilience despite the now limited cultivated areas. Result: Due to its late ripening, it allows for the gradual development of its aromas, producing wines that reflect the sea breeze of the region.
