Kypreiko (Kypreiko)
Introduction
The "Kypreiko" (or Kypreiko) is not a distinct variety; it is a common synonym for Mavro, the traditional red variety of Cyprus. In ampelographic dictionaries, Kypreiko / Kypreiko Mavro / Kypriotiko is recorded as a primary synonym of Mavro, with references to Greek local types (Crete, etc.). Mavro is one of the two main indigenous varieties of the Cypriot vineyard (along with the white Xynisteri) and is widely used for red/rosé wines, as well as in traditional grape products.
Tasting Notes
Red & rosé: usually light to medium-bodied, with red fruits (cherry), mild tannins, and a refreshing sensation; best enjoyed young. Example of a modern, well-crafted label: Tsiakkas “Moulos” 2022 (12.6% abv) from very old vines—light, juicy, cherry-like.
Terroir
Typically produces large, dense berries/clusters with thick skins; it is a fertile/productive variety. In warm areas, it ripens well, but the wines can be relatively light in color and mild in structure, which is why cooler altitudes or blending are often sought.
