Skiadopoulo
Introduction
Skiadopoulo is one of the most historic white varieties of the Ionian Islands, closely linked to the wine tradition of Zakynthos. Despite its high productivity, Skiadopoulo manages to produce wines with remarkable nerve and intensity, forming the "backbone" of traditional Verdea and a promising choice for modern single-varietal bottlings. Ionian Origin: The variety has deep roots in the Ionian Islands. After the devastating earthquake of 1953 in Zakynthos, Skiadopoulo gained significant ground in new plantings due to its high productivity and resilience. Genetic Paradox: In international literature (VIVC), it is referred to as a white color mutation of the red variety Fokiano, which explains its dynamism and structure. Nomenclature: It is also known by names such as "Zachara" or "Zacharo" due to its ability to accumulate sugars. Caution: It should not be confused with the distinct variety Zakynthino.
Tasting Notes
Skiadopoulo surprises with its complexity and freshness, often reminiscent of the character of Assyrtiko: Fruit: Dominated by citrus (lime, lemon) and stone fruits (apricot, peach). Floral Notes: Subtle white flowers and herbal hints are discernible. Body & Acidity: It has lively to high acidity and a medium to full body, offering a very good sense of structure in the mouth.
Terroir
Zakynthos as the epicenter: It is the main cultivation area, playing a decisive role in the production of PGI Zakynthos wines. Ionian Islands: It is also permitted and widely cultivated in the Ionian Islands, maintaining the character of a typical island variety that loves limestone soils and the sea breeze.
