Theiako Lefko
Introduction
Theiako Lefko is one of the rare "hidden treasures" of the Ionian. Although the red Theiako is more known for its color intensity, the white version of the variety represents a distinct oenological chapter, primarily found in Ithaca and neighboring Kefalonia. It is a variety that perfectly expresses the "island" character, combining freshness with an unexpected structure.
Tasting Notes
Color: Pale lemon with bright, almost transparent highlights. Aromas: Dominated by citrus (lemon, citron), green apple, and notes of white flowers, often with a hint of wet stone. Palate: Dry with a light to medium body. The acidity is the "backbone" of the wine, leading to a clean and saline finish.
Gastronomy
Fresh Seafood: Raw shellfish, clams, oysters, or a simple fish carpaccio. Fried Fish: Whitebait, anchovies, or smelt that seek the wine's acidity. Salads & Fresh Cheeses: Green salads with herbs or a fresh Kefalonian feta.
Terroir
Region: Its heart is in Ithaca, where it is cultivated in small, traditional vineyards. It is also sporadically found in Kefalonia, often among Robola or Tsousi vines. Terroir: Prefers limestone, rocky soils and altitudes that allow the grape to maintain its acidity. Proximity to the sea offers a subtle salinity, characteristic of Ionian wines.
