Thrapsa
Introduction
Thrapsa is a rare red variety from the southern part of Greece, serving as a historical link between the vineyards of Crete and Laconia. It is one of the most resilient and 'colorful' varieties in our country, used for decades as the 'pillar' of blends, providing depth, color, and structure, and is now gaining recognition as a standalone, single-varietal presence.
Tasting Notes
Color: Impressive, impenetrable deep purple with violet highlights. Aromas: A palette of black fruits (overripe blackberry, plum), notes of licorice, leather, and a strong earthy sensation (wet soil). Palate: Rich, warm, and full-bodied. Its tannins are noticeable but mature, while its acidity is moderate, allowing the sweetness of the fruit to dominate the aftertaste.
Gastronomy
Game & Red Meats: Wild boar in the oven, beef stew, or charcoal-grilled ribs. Rich Sauces: Dishes with intense spices, cinnamon, and clove. Aged Cheeses: Aged Cretan graviera, ladotyri from Mytilene, or spicy kefalotyri.
Terroir
Regions: Its main base is in central Crete (Heraklion Prefecture), but it maintains an exceptionally high-quality presence in Laconia, where it ideally adapts to schist soils. Resilience: It is perhaps the most resilient variety to extreme drought and heatwaves. The more challenging the conditions, the more it concentrates its sugars and anthocyanins. Result: It produces wines with deep color, high alcohol content, and a robust personality that reflects the dry, warm climate of its regions.
