Tsampato Mavro
Introduction
Tsampato Mavro is a rare, indigenous red variety from the Cyclades, part of the "colorful" viticultural mosaic of the Aegean. With its official recognition in 2025, Tsampato Mavro gains an official identity, supporting the efforts of island producers to highlight the unique character of small, local vineyards.
Tasting Notes
It exudes aromas of fresh red fruit (berry, wild cherry) with characteristic "island" vibrancy. In experimental or orange vinifications, Tsampato offers additional aromatic depth and a distinctive sense of texture. It has good acidity, which helps maintain freshness even in warm climates.
Terroir
Serifos: The island is the main hub for the revival of the variety. Producers in Serifos increasingly use it in modern vinifications, highlighting its connection to the island's mineral terroir. Kea (Tzia): There are historical references and mentions of its cultivation in Kea, although plantings remain extremely limited. The plantings are few, scattered, and often found in old, dry-stone vineyards cultivated with traditional methods.
