Votsiki
Introduction
Votsiki is indeed a rare red variety found in Epirus (mainly in the regions of Ioannina and Zitsa), forming part of the 'group' of mountain varieties in the area, along with Vlachiko and Bekari. Mountain Character: Like Vlachiko, Votsiki does not follow the pattern of the rich reds of the South. It is a wine with 'nerve' and elegance. Blends of Epirus: Traditionally, it participates in blends with Vlachiko and Bekari, offering aromatic complexity and additional acidity. Rare Heritage: It is part of the effort by Epirote winemakers to preserve indigenous varieties that were at risk of extinction due to international varieties.
Tasting Notes
Color: Ruby, medium intensity, with bright highlights. Aromas: Dominated by red fruits (wild cherry, cornelian cherry), herbal notes, and a subtle spicy sensation (pepper). Palate: Refreshing, with 'lively' acidity and fine tannins. The aftertaste is clean and leaves a sense of forest freshness.
Gastronomy
Epirote Pies: Meat pies or pies with wild greens and feta. Meats: Lamb in the oven or traditional kontosouvli. Cheeses: Smoked Metsovone or spicy kefalograviera.
Terroir
Region: Its heart lies in the mountainous vineyards of Epirus. It is a variety that has adapted to the harsh mountain conditions, at altitudes often exceeding 600-700 meters. Terroir: Prefers the limestone soils of Zitsa. Epirus, with its high rainfall and cool climate, helps Votsiki maintain its acidity and not over-ripen easily. Result: It produces wines with medium body, intense acidity, and a character marked by 'mountain' freshness.
