Baba Chasan
Introduction
Baba Chasan is a surprising white variety from Epirus, recently brought out of obscurity thanks to efforts to preserve the local viticultural heritage. With its official inclusion in the National Variety Catalog in 2025, Baba Chasan ceases to be a "myth" of old winemakers and dynamically enters the forefront of modern Greek winemaking as one of the most promising voices of the continental terroir.
Tasting Notes
Baba Chasan was chosen precisely for its remarkable aromatic potential. Researchers highlight an excellent balance between ripeness and acidity, suggesting wines with "nerve," elegance, and fruit purity. The initial samples are dry white wines fermented in stainless steel tanks. The winemakers aim to showcase the freshness and primary aromatic character of the grape.
Terroir
Its presence is purely continental. The old vines that formed the basis of the research were found scattered in the prefectures of Ioannina and Thesprotia. The variety seems to thrive in the mountainous and semi-mountainous terroirs of Epirus, where the cool temperatures and unique terrain favor the preservation of acidity.
