Begleri
Introduction
Begleri is the ultimate white ambassador of Ikaria, a variety that has intertwined its history with the rugged, granite landscape of the island. It is a grape with a "strong personality" and extroverted aromas, capturing the sea breeze and the mountainous character of the Ikarian vineyards, earning a well-deserved place among the most interesting emerging varieties of the Aegean.
Tasting Notes
Begleri is known for its "crisp" and lively character, often reminiscent of international varieties like Sauvignon Blanc: Fruits: Dominated by citrus and tropical fruits (mango, pineapple). Signature: The most characteristic aromatic element identified by tasters is a clear note of kiwi. Texture: It has high, refreshing acidity that adds nerve and length to the finish.
Gastronomy
Dry Single Varietals: This is the most common method of vinification. These are bright, aromatic wines with an alcohol content of 12–13% vol, ideal for accompanying seafood and fish. Pairs with: Seafood, "twisted" salads, shellfish.
Terroir
PGI Ikaria: Its cultivation is almost exclusively limited to Ikaria, at altitudes ranging from 50 meters to 800 meters. Conditions: The vines are cultivated on traditional terraces to retain the scarce soil and water. The low yields per stremma (about 500 kg per stremma) ensure high quality and concentration of aromas.
