Flaskasyrtiko
Introduction
Flaskasyrtiko is one of the most enigmatic and rare white varieties of the Aegean vineyard. Despite the shared name with "Assyrtiko," it is a genetically distinct variety that survives as a "hidden treasure" mainly in Santorini. Its presence in the old, ungrafted vineyards of Thira adds depth to the island's multi-varietal heritage, serving as a living monument to the viticultural biodiversity of the Cyclades.
Tasting Notes
It produces high-alcohol wines with notable volume on the palate. Its profile is milder and more "subdued" compared to Assyrtiko. Dominated by hints of ripe white-fleshed fruits, it lacks the intense minerality or the electric acidity of Assyrtiko.
Terroir
It thrives in poor, volcanic soils, utilizing the "breath" of the caldera (nighttime moisture) to survive drought. It shows moderate vigor. Its ripening occurs in late August, synchronized with the general harvest of Santorini's white varieties. Unlike the robust Assyrtiko, Flaskasyrtiko appears to be more vulnerable to fungal diseases (powdery mildew, downy mildew).
