Gemira
Introduction
Gemira (or Gemera) is a variety that bridges two major viticultural worlds: the Cyclades and Crete. In Santorini, it is part of the island's volcanic richness, while in Crete, it is one of those endangered ancient varieties that the island's winemakers are striving to preserve. The presence of Gemira in both places serves as an oenological testament to ancient trade routes. It is a 'bridge' variety that shows how grapes traveled across the Aegean. In Crete, Gemira is considered part of the vineyard's 'ark,' one of the many varieties awaiting their turn for full revival.
Terroir
It is primarily found in central Crete (Heraklion Prefecture), often scattered in old vineyards among Vilana and Vidiano. It is a white variety with particular resistance to heat. In Crete, where the climate is warmer than the Cyclades, Gemira manages to maintain a good structure without the grape becoming 'tired.'
