Mavrokorakas
Introduction
Mavrokorakas is one of the rarest and most notably impressive red varieties of the Greek vineyard. Its name, which refers to the jet-black color of a raven, accurately describes the exceptionally dark skin of its berries. Although historically its presence is traced in various parts of mainland Greece, its modern classification brings it back to the forefront as a valuable genetic treasure of the Cyclades.
Tasting Notes
Due to its dark skin, it offers intense color concentration, making it an ideal "enhancer" in blends that require depth. In the dry and warm terroirs of the Cyclades, Mavrokorakas tends to produce wines with good structure. Winemakers usually opt for gentle extractions to avoid the harshness of the tannins.
Terroir
According to the national catalog (FEK 2025), Mavrokorakas is recognized as a wine-producing variety based in the viticultural district of the Cyclades. Although today it is associated with the islands, earlier references document its sporadic presence in the Peloponnese.
