Nigrikiotiko
Introduction
Nigrikiotiko (or Nigriotiko) is a historic red variety from Western Macedonia, closely linked to the winemaking tradition of Siatista. Although it is now considered a rare and endangered variety, its value remains high as it is a key component in the creation of the region's famous sun-dried wine, imparting sweetness and a velvety texture.
Tasting Notes
Aromas: In its classic expression (sun-dried), it is dominated by dried fruits, raisin, and honey. With aging, it develops complex notes of nuts, such as walnut, and sweet spices. Palate: It has low acidity and exceptionally soft tannins. This "sweet" nature of the grape makes it ideal for producing wines with a rich body and smooth mouthfeel.
Terroir
Locality: Its cultivation is almost exclusively limited to the Kozani region, centered around Siatista. It is mainly found in very old vineyards, often mixed with other varieties. Viticulture: It is a late-ripening variety that matures slowly in the fall. It is characterized by good disease resistance, a necessary trait for the region's climate.
