Pavlos
Introduction
Pavlos is one of the most distinguished and historic white varieties of the Ionian Islands, centered in Zakynthos. Although it was for years the 'hidden' ingredient in traditional blends, modern winemaking has brought it to the forefront as an independent, elegant personality. With its characteristic aroma and 'crisp' acidity, Pavlos is now considered one of the most important ambassadors of Ionian viticulture, linking the glorious past of Verdea with the dynamic future of single-varietal wines.
Tasting Notes
Pavlos is renowned for its purity and multi-layered nose: Fruits: Dominated by stone fruits (peach, apricot) and pear, with tropical notes (mango, pineapple) also present. Flowers & Herbs: Often exudes aromas of orange blossom, while some vinifications reveal subtle herbal or spicy hints. Structure: Characterized by refreshing, 'crisp' acidity and an elegant body, making it exceptionally pleasant and balanced.
Terroir
The Core: Zakynthos is its natural home, where wineries such as Ktima Gramvousa, Solomos, and Ktima Goumas have invested in its promotion. Dispersion: It is also sporadically found in other Ionian islands, with reports of cultivation in Achaia, indicating a trend of expansion in the western viticultural arc. Harvest: Ripening is usually completed in early September, allowing the grape to maintain its vibrancy.
