Tsardana
Introduction
Tsardana is a historic red variety from Western Crete, which in ampelographic reality is identified or considered a close relative and local synonym of Romeiko. It is the cornerstone of wine production in Chania, carrying a unique temperament that allows for the creation of wines with completely different profiles—from crystalline whites to deeply oxidative and sweet. In the Cretan countryside, the name Tsardana is often used interchangeably with Romeiko. It is officially registered in the international VIVC registry as Tsardana N (code #12679) and is classified among the "western origin" varieties of the island. It is a versatile but also "challenging" variety, due to its high tendency towards oxidation and the high alcohol content it easily achieves.
Tasting Notes
The aromatic spectrum of Tsardana (as Romeiko) depends directly on the type of vinification: White vinifications (Blanc de Noirs): It reveals aromas of white fruits (apple, pear), citrus, and tropical hints (banana, pineapple). Red & Rosé vinifications: Dominated by stone cherry, blackberry, and notes of sweet spices. Aged/Oxidative forms: Complex aromas of dried fruits, caramel, nuts, and orange marmalade appear.
Terroir
Its cultivation is found almost exclusively in the prefectures of Chania (centered in Kissamos) and Rethymno. It is perfectly acclimatized to the dry and warm environment of Crete, maintaining its productivity even in adverse conditions.
