Volitsa Lefki
Introduction
Volitsa Lefki is a historic, indigenous variety from the Peloponnese, part of the broader 'Volitses' family. Although its name is less known to the general public, for the winemakers of mountainous Aigialeia and Kalavryta, it is a hidden gem, offering wines with exceptional structure and a rare sense of 'nerve'.
Tasting Notes
Color: Pale lemon with intense green highlights. Aromas: Dominated by citrus fruits (lime, lemon), green apple, unripe pear, and a characteristic sense of wet stone or minerality. Palate: Nervous and refreshing. The acidity is the backbone of the wine, providing a sense of purity and energy that lasts through the finish.
Gastronomy
Seafood: Raw shellfish (oysters, clams), sashimi or ceviche of white fish. Fried: Small fish, zucchini fritters, or vegetable tempura, as the acidity 'cuts' the oiliness of the frying. White Cheeses: Fresh goat cheese, anthotyro, or a refreshing feta.
Terroir
Its main homeland is Mountainous Aigialeia and the slopes of the mountains around Kalavryta. It is cultivated at altitudes often exceeding 800 meters, in limestone and sloping soils, which allow the grape to maintain its high acidity. The environment is mountainous and cool. Volitsa Lefki benefits from the large temperature differences between day and night (thermal range), which helps in the slow and quality maturation of its aromas.
