Tsaoussi
Introduction
Tsaoussi is one of the most noble and 'generous' white varieties of the Ionian Islands. With a history that fades into the depths of centuries and a presence that dominates the ungrafted vineyards of Kefalonia, Tsaoussi offers wines with a full body and mature character, serving as the ideal counterbalance to the strict acidity of Robola. Its history is filled with charming contradictions. While some sources attribute Egyptian roots to it, local tradition in the Ionian Islands suggests the variety was brought from Zakynthos to Kefalonia about 600–700 years ago. Its name seems to be linked to its 'generosity,' as it has large berries and impressive clusters, a feature that explains why it was historically used as a table grape. It is registered in the VIVC as TSAOUSSI – Blanc.
Tasting Notes
Tsaoussi is distinguished by its ripe and 'sweet' aromatic character: Dominated by ripe white fruits and stone fruits, such as melon and peach. It often exhibits honeyed notes, while in skin-contact vinifications, aromas of quince and citrus are highlighted. It has low to medium acidity, which gives it a soft and friendly mouthfeel.
Terroir
Kefalonia: It is its modern 'home,' centered on the Paliki peninsula and Monambeles. There, old, ungrafted vineyards survive on limestone hills, providing the best raw material. Other Ionian Islands: It is sporadically cultivated in Corfu and Zakynthos. Northern Greece: Small cultivation pockets are found in parts of Macedonia and Thrace, although its island character remains the most recognizable.
