Domaine Methymnaeos
Intro
Methymnaeos was the first professional bottled wine from Lesvos, reviving the nearly extinct local variety Chidiriotiko. The cultivation is organic, respecting the land and aiming for authentic terroir expression. The winery was also the first to produce orange wine in Greece and the first organic exporter on the island.
Estate
Domaine Methymnaeos is located in Chidira, western Lesvos, within the crater of an inactive volcano. Its history began in the mid-1990s, with the first bottling released in 1999. Methymnaeos has gained international acclaim, with exports to many countries and consistent recognition from wine experts.
Vineyards
The volcanic nature of the soil (rich in sulfur and copper) not only imparts intense minerality and a mineral character to the wines but also acts as a natural barrier against vine diseases. The range includes three main expressions of Chidiriotiko: Methymnaeos Orange, Methymnaeos White, Methymnaeos Red. Additionally, labels such as Pythagorean Crater (Muscat) are available.
Tourism
The estate is open to visitors and offers organized tours that include: A tour of the vineyard within the volcanic crater, a visit to the winery and the small museum, participation in tastings with an emphasis on the philosophy of organic viticulture. The winery also has an amphitheater for cultural and educational activities. Visits mainly occur during the summer months and are usually free.
