Araklinos
Introduction
Araklinos is an extremely rare red variety from Zakynthos, considered one of the most dynamic and promising "treasures" of the Ionian. Although it was on the brink of extinction for years, its recent revival by local winemakers has revealed a wine with tremendous concentration, depth, and a personality that can be compared to great reds on the global stage.
Tasting Notes
Color: Deep, almost black purple with violet highlights. Aromas: Concentrated aromas of black fruits (plum, blackberry), notes of chocolate, coffee, leather, and a subtle herbaceousness reminiscent of eucalyptus. Palate: Rich and full-bodied, with high acidity and robust yet quality tannins. The finish is exceptionally long, leaving a spicy sensation.
Gastronomy
Rich Meats: Braised beef cheeks, game (venison or wild boar), and meats with intense wine sauces. Local Flavors: Zakynthian stew or "kokkinisto" meat with plenty of garlic and spices. Cheeses: Very mature yellow cheeses, such as aged graviera or local ladotyri from Zakynthos.
Terroir
Cultivated exclusively in Zakynthos, mainly in the mountainous and semi-mountainous parts of the island. The soils there are limestone and rocky, forcing the vine to develop with low yields, offering fruit of exceptional quality and concentration. The Ionian is characterized by high rainfall in winter and intense sunshine in summer. The sea humidity and cool winds blowing on the island help Araklinos to mature smoothly, maintaining its acidity despite high temperatures.
