Asprouda Chalkidas
Introduction
Asprouda Chalkidas is a rare white variety from Evia, part of the broader family of 'Asproudes' of Central Greece. It is a vinous treasure that survives mainly in central Evia and the Lelantine plain, carrying the heritage of a region with a long viticultural tradition dating back to antiquity.
Tasting Notes
Color: Bright straw yellow with green highlights. Aromas: An elegant composition of white-fleshed fruits (pear, white peach), citrus notes, and a subtle herbaceousness reminiscent of mountain tea. Palate: Balanced and refreshing, with a slight oiliness that balances with the acidity, leading to a clean and fruity aftertaste.
Gastronomy
Seafood: Grilled fish from the Euboean Gulf, fried calamari, or octopus with herbs. Local Pies: Cheese pies with local feta or herb pies with fresh chard. Light Dishes: Pasta with seafood or salads with fresh herbs and white cheeses.
Terroir
Cultivated in the fertile and often clayey soils of Central Evia. The Lelantine plain, with its rich sedimentary soils, allows the variety to develop satisfactory volume, while the semi-mountainous slopes around Chalkida offer better drainage and aromatic intensity. The climate is classic Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers. Proximity to the Euboean Gulf creates a favorable microclimate, where sea breezes moderate high temperatures, allowing Asprouda to ripen smoothly without losing its freshness.
