Glykopati
Introduction
Glykopati is an extremely rare red variety from the Peloponnese, primarily found in the historic vineyards of Messinia and Trifylia. It is a variety that carries the tradition of the region's 'sweet-juiced' grapes and, although it was at risk of extinction, in recent years it has been the subject of research and experimentation to revive the local character of the Messinian land.
Tasting Notes
Color: Deep ruby with purple highlights. Aromas: Dominated by ripe red fruits (sour cherry, sweet cherry), framed by notes of jam, sweet spices (cinnamon), and a hint of chocolate. Palate: Soft, with very low and friendly tannins. The alcohol sensation is often noticeable, offering a 'warm' and full body.
Gastronomy
Meats with Fruits: Pork with plums or chicken with honey and spices. Spicy Dishes: Dishes from oriental cuisine or traditional spetzofai. Desserts (for the sweet versions): Sweets with dark chocolate, tarts with red fruits, or aged blue cheeses.
Terroir
Its natural habitat is Messinia, a region with a long viticultural tradition. It is cultivated in clay-loam and limestone soils, which favor proper ripening and the preservation of sugars in the grape. The Mediterranean climate of Messinia, with mild rainfall and intense sunshine, allows Glykopati to fully develop its aromatic potential. The sea breezes from the Ionian and Messinian Gulf provide the necessary coolness so that the variety does not lose its 'nerve'.
