Goustolidi
Introduction
Goustolidi (or Avgoustiolidi) is the "noble" white variety of Zakynthos, named for its ripening in August and considered a true "jewel" of the Ionian vineyard. It is a variety with a strong personality, managing to combine power with elegance, offering wines reminiscent of the sun and sea of the Ionian Islands.
Tasting Notes
Color: Bright lemon with golden highlights. Aromas: A rich palette of ripe stone fruits (peach, apricot), notes of honey, white flowers, and a subtle herbaceousness (chamomile). Palate: Full and oily, with balanced acidity. The finish is long, leaving a sensation of sweet fruits and minerality.
Gastronomy
Fatty Fish: Baked grouper or scorpionfish, as well as grilled shrimp. Local Flavors: Traditional Zakynthian sofrito (even though it's meat, the wine's structure allows it) or rabbit stew. Rich Sauces: Pasta with white sauces, truffle, or mushroom risotto.
Terroir
Its natural home is Zakynthos, where it is traditionally cultivated in limestone and clay soils. The island's vineyards benefit from the Ionian humidity, but Goustolidi requires proper management to showcase its finesse. The hot summer of Zakynthos aids in the rapid accumulation of sugars, but the sea breeze protects the grape from excessive heat, allowing the aromas to remain fresh.
