Maloukato
Introduction
Maloukato is one of the most enigmatic and rare white varieties of the Aegean. Despite its limited spread, Maloukato presents exceptional scientific interest due to its unique chemical profile, which differentiates it from the usual white grapes of the Cyclades. It survives in a few vineyards, mainly in Paros and Santorini, serving as a resilient "soldier" of the arid island environment.
Tasting Notes
In Blends: Due to its rarity, it participates almost exclusively in local blends. There, its phenolic richness can offer body, structure, and a sense of a "full" mouthfeel. Style: Although single-variety samples are minimal, its profile suggests white wines with "nerve," volume, and a distinctive antioxidant character.
Terroir
Regions: It is primarily found in the Cyclades, with recorded presence in Paros. There are also references in Thira and Thirasia, where it is classified among the traditional local white varieties. Resilience: It is characterized as a particularly resilient variety, capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of the Aegean (drought, strong winds, salinity).
