Mavráki
Introduction
Mavráki is not a unified, standalone, and internationally recognized variety, but a local synonym primarily found in southern Greece. It serves as an "umbrella term" for a group of red grapes often identified with Agiorgitiko or belonging to the broader "Mavroudia" family. Due to this nomenclature ambiguity, Mavráki is one of the most intriguing puzzles for ampelographers and winemakers in the Peloponnese.
Tasting Notes
It produces wines with a deep red color and an emphasis on red fruit (cherry, sour cherry). It typically has moderate tannins and balanced acidity, making the wine "round" and consumer-friendly. The judicious use of oak helps develop its aromatic profile without overshadowing the fruit's freshness.
Terroir
It is its "home." You will find it in old vineyards in Laconia, Argolida, and occasionally Arcadia. It rarely appears in single-varietal labels under the name "Mavráki." It is usually part of traditional field blends with other local varieties, enhancing color and aromatic complexity.
