Moschardina
Introduction
Moschardina is one of the rare aromatic treasures of the Ionian Islands, centered on the island of Zakynthos. Although cultivated in very limited areas, its presence alongside iconic varieties such as Goustolidi and Skiadopoulo adds additional depth and complexity to the Zakynthian vineyard. Its connection to the Muscat family (as suggested by its name and synonyms) makes it a variety of particular oenological interest. Moschardina is an indigenous white variety of Zakynthos, surviving thanks to the persistence of local producers who preserve the island's traditional varieties. It is officially registered in the international VIVC registry with ID #8060. In European catalogs, the name Moschatela (Moschatela B) is often identified with Moschardina, indicating a common aromatic orientation.
Tasting Notes
Although single-varietal bottlings are rare, Moschardina plays a crucial role in local blends: Due to its etymological connection to "moscho," it imparts elegant aromas and finesse to the blends.
Terroir
Moschardina is a variety that balances between vigor and resilience: It is characterized as moderately vigorous but quite productive, offering consistent yields to the grower. It is quite drought-resistant, a valuable trait for the Mediterranean climate of the Ionian Islands. Budding begins in mid-March, while ripening is completed in the first ten days of September, following the pace of most white varieties in the region.
