Proniko
Introduction
Proniko is one of the lesser-known but officially recognized red varieties of the Aegean. Although its presence on the modern wine map is extremely discreet, its recent institutional protection and inclusion in the lists of rare Cycladic varieties make it an interesting piece of the puzzle of island viticultural heritage.
Tasting Notes
Fruit: Dominated by fresh red fruits, such as cherry and wild strawberry. Herbaceousness: Subtle herbal notes are discernible, adding freshness to the whole. Structure: Its style is usually light to medium, avoiding the heavy, tannic character of more 'robust' reds.
Terroir
Cycladic Roots: Its presence is mainly found in the Cyclades, with Syros being the center of its cultivation (often referred to as 'red proniko'). Rarity: Its plantings are extremely limited and scattered. It is among the 'unknown' island varieties preserved thanks to old vineyards and small, family-run farms.
