Skopelitiko
Introduction
Skopelitiko is one of the most interesting red varieties of the Ionian, carrying a long history of migrations in its name. Although its nomenclature roots connect it to the Sporades, the variety found its second home in Corfu, where today it is one of the main pillars of local wine production, offering wines with intense personality and rustic charm.
Tasting Notes
Skopelitiko is a variety with 'two faces,' depending on the winemaker's approach: The Rustic Character: International literature often describes it as a dark, tannic wine with a somewhat rustic character and moderate acidity. The Modern Version: In newer Corfiot bottlings, the profile becomes more elegant, emphasizing red fruits (especially cherry), pleasant tannins, and balanced acidity, making it particularly 'drinkable.'
Gastronomy
Gastronomic Rosé: The variety is excellently utilized for the production of rosé wines with a deep pink color. With short maceration, it produces wines with an intense fruity nose and sufficient structure to accompany food.
Terroir
Corfu: Today, the island of the Phaeacians is the main 'hub' of Skopelitiko. Its cultivation is concentrated in the central and southern parts of the island (areas such as Lefkimmi and Korakiana). Viticultural Characteristics: It is a late-ripening variety, but it is distinguished by its good resistance to fungal diseases, a valuable trait for the humid climate of Corfu.
