Tsougiannides
Introduction
Tsougiannides is an extremely rare, white indigenous variety from Thrace, serving as a living relic of the viticultural history of Evros. Although its presence is limited today, the variety is at the center of revival efforts, as it carries the flavor identity of a region with a deep tradition in viticulture, such as Soufli. It is an old variety of Thrace that has recently come back into focus through research programs (such as Interreg/Dionysos) aimed at preserving the genetic material of the area. It is recorded in the international VIVC registry as Tsougiannides B (Blanc). In the official European Union catalogs, it is mainly referred to as a table grape variety, indicating its historical use as an edible grape.
Tasting Notes
Due to the rarity of vinifications, there is not yet an established "typical" aromatic profile; however, the characteristics of the fruit suggest the following: A mild aromatic expression is expected, with an emphasis on pure white fruit. The balance between sweetness and a slight acidic sensation suggests wines with freshness and a pleasant, simple structure.
Terroir
Evros: The "heart" of the variety beats in Soufli, where it survives in old, traditional vineyards. Thrace: Historically, its spread was broader throughout the Thracian land, with sporadic references placing it in neighboring areas as well. Today, its presence is almost exclusively localized in small pockets around Evros.
