Volitsa Mavri
Introduction
Volitsa Mavri (or Mavri Volitsa) is an iconic red variety from the Peloponnese, considered the "dark" treasure of mountainous Aigialeia. It is a variety with a strong character and history, which in recent years has been dynamically revived, offering wines that combine the power of the mountain with an unexpected aromatic finesse.
Tasting Notes
Color: Deep ruby with purple highlights. Aromas: A palette of black cherries, plums, and wild berries, enriched with notes of eucalyptus, tea, leather, and sometimes a hint of chocolate. Palate: Full-bodied, with noticeable but well-integrated tannins and high acidity. The finish is long, leaving a sensation of spices and herbs.
Gastronomy
Game & Red Meats: Wild boar in a casserole, venison, or slow-cooked beef cheeks. Traditional Dishes: Oven-baked lamb with rosemary or grilled country sausage. Cheeses: Aged yellow cheeses, such as a spicy graviera or a smoked Metsovone.
Terroir
It is cultivated almost exclusively on the steep slopes of Mountainous Aigialeia, at altitudes ranging from 600 to 1,000 meters. The soils are mainly clay-loam with a high limestone content, which helps concentrate the grape's characteristics. The mountainous climate, with cold winters and cool summers, is ideal for the variety. The large temperature differences between day and night allow the tannins to mature properly while maintaining the necessary acidity.
