Asprouda Zakynthou
Introduction
Asprouda Zakynthou is a rare white variety from the Ionian Islands, a key component in the island's traditional winemaking. Although often found in blends, its distinctive character and ability to impart body and aromatic complexity make it one of the most interesting 'links' in Zakynthian viticulture.
Tasting Notes
Color: Bright lemon with golden highlights. Aromas: Dominated by ripe stone fruits (peach, apricot), notes of honey, wax, and a subtle herbaceousness. Palate: Full and oily, with medium acidity and a warm, long finish that leaves a sweet fruit sensation.
Gastronomy
Fatty Fish: Grilled sea bream, salmon, or baked grouper with potatoes. Local Cuisine: Zakynthian rabbit stew or chicken with thick red sauce and grated ladotyri cheese. Rich Dishes: Risotto with mushrooms or pasta with creamy white sauces.
Terroir
Thrives mainly in the semi-mountainous and mountainous areas of Zakynthos, in limestone soils that offer good drainage. These vineyards, often at altitude, help the variety maintain its balance. The Ionian climate, with abundant winter rains and high humidity moderated by sea breezes, favors the smooth ripening of Asprouda. The variety is well adapted to the island's conditions, developing rich characteristics without losing its freshness.
