Bekari
Introduction
Bekari is a rare, red indigenous variety from Epirus, serving as the "pillar" of the red wines of Zitsa. Despite its historical challenges and near extinction in the 20th century, it is now at the forefront of an impressive revival. It is the variety that provides color, structure, and "nerve" to the blends of the region, proving that the mountainous terroir of Ioannina can produce red wines with depth and remarkable aging potential.
Tasting Notes
Color: Rich, deep red. Aromas: Plum, blackberry, black cherry, earthy notes (mushroom), spices. Palate: Lively acidity, robust tannins, full body (in blends).
Gastronomy
Pairings: Lamb stew, game, grilled meats, mature cheeses, and cured meats.
Terroir
Its cultivation is found exclusively in the Prefecture of Ioannina, centered around the Zitsa zone. The limestone, rocky soils and mountainous climate allow the phenolic components to mature slowly and steadily, offering structure without excessive alcohol.
