Fileri
Introduction
Fileri is not just a grape variety, but an "ampelographic chameleon" that defines the wine identity of Southern Greece. With roots that trace back to antiquity, this variety forms the genetic basis of an entire family of clones, dramatically transforming depending on the altitude and soil that hosts it, offering from explosively aromatic whites to robust barrel-aged and refreshing rosés.
Tasting Notes
Due to its reddish skin (Gris), Fileri offers an impressive range of vinifications: Blanc de Gris: White wines with crystalline clarity and nerve. Rosé: With a soft salmon color, herbal aromas (basil), and a spicy aftertaste. Fumé (Barrel): Rich texture with notes of smoke, honeycomb, and nuts. Sparkling: Its high acidity makes it ideal for bubbles (traditional method or closed tank).
Gastronomy
As an Aperitif / White: Sushi, ceviche, dolmades avgolemono, green salads. Rosé: Vegetable dishes (briam, stuffed vegetables), pasta with light red sauces. Fumé: Grilled poultry, linguine with smoked salmon, aged cheeses.
Terroir
The variety dominates two distinct ecosystems of the Peloponnese: Mantineia (Arcadia) with an altitude of 650-750 meters and a continental/cool climate, and Messinia (Trifylia) with an altitude of 300-400 meters and a Mediterranean/warm climate. Fileri is a vigorous and particularly productive variety with large and loosely clustered bunches. It is a late-ripening variety and shows sensitivity to downy mildew and powdery mildew.
