Kontokladi
Introduction
Kontokladi is a rare white variety from Zakynthos, belonging to the category of the "unsung heroes" of the Greek vineyard. Traditionally cultivated in Achaia and Ilia, it offers wines with intense freshness and vigor, often forming the "backbone" of many local blends, imparting liveliness and longevity. The name "Kontokladi" derives from the morphology of the vine, which tends to produce short shoots (branches), making the plant's shape particularly compact. Historically, Kontokladi was the "mainstay" of Retsina and the white table wines of the Peloponnese. Its high acidity helped to "refresh" other varieties that matured more quickly or were richer. Although rare as a single varietal, some producers in Achaia and Ilia have begun to vinify it separately, highlighting its potential to produce very elegant and "nervous" wines.
Tasting Notes
Color: Light straw yellow with green highlights. Aromas: Subtle citrus aromas (lemon, grapefruit), green apple, and notes of white flowers, with a light herbal sensation on the finish. Palate: Dry, light to medium body, with acidity dominating and offering an "electric" sensation on the palate.
Gastronomy
Fried Seafood: Whitebait, anchovies, or calamari, where the wine's acidity acts like "lemon" on the fish. Pies: Traditional greens pie or zucchini pie with feta. Ladera: Stuffed vegetables or green beans, as the wine's freshness balances the oiliness of the olive oil.
Terroir
Region: Its natural presence is found in the Northwestern Peloponnese. It is a variety closely associated with the vineyards of Achaia, where it was often co-cultivated with other local varieties. It prefers medium-textured, clay-loam soils that allow it to retain moisture. It is resistant to the conditions of the Greek summer, although it requires attention during ripening to maintain its valuable acidity.
