Potamisi Mavro
Introduction
Potamisi Mavro is the red 'answer' to the better-known white Potamisi of the Cyclades. Despite the name similarity, it is a genetically distinct and extremely rare variety, which is now at the forefront of 'natural' winemaking in the Aegean. Centered on Tinos, Mavro Potamisi is being revived through old, bush vines, offering wines with intense personality, wild fruit, and an authentic sense of the Cycladic terroir.
Tasting Notes
Potamisi Mavro produces wines with an 'earthy' and lively character: Red Fruits: Dominated by wild strawberry and cherry. Herbaceousness: Notes of sage and wild Cycladic herbs are discernible. Ripeness: In more concentrated versions, aromas of black fig emerge. Structure: It offers a remarkable tannic backbone, adding depth and length to the wine.
Terroir
Tinos - The 'Metropolis': The variety thrives in the dry, wind-swept vineyards of Tinos, often in very old, own-rooted bush vines. Distribution: It is sporadically found in Mykonos, while total plantings remain extremely limited, making it one of the rarest grapes of the Aegean. Terroir: It is perfectly adapted to the granitic and schist soils, enduring water scarcity and strong northern winds.
