Strofyliatiko
Introduction
Strofyliatiko is one of the rarest and most 'obscure' white varieties of the Aegean, primarily preserved in the remote areas of the Cyclades. Its recent official recognition in 2025 highlights its importance for the preservation of island biodiversity and paves the way for its oenological utilization beyond the narrow confines of local consumption. The variety is officially registered in the National Catalogue (Government Gazette B’ 3831/18.07.2025) as Strofyliatiko B. It is included in the EU Community catalogue of vine varieties, fully legitimizing its use for wine production within the European Union. Despite its age, it remained unrecorded for years, surviving thanks to the vintners who insisted on the native varieties of their islands.
Tasting Notes
A profile with lemony notes, citrus fruits, and white flowers is expected. Its fresh acidity is its main characteristic, accompanied by the typical salty-mineral sensation provided by the proximity of the vineyards to the sea. Usually light and vibrant, aiming to highlight its freshness.
Terroir
Anafi is the main reference point for Strofyliatiko. There, it is considered the basis for the island's traditional white wine. It is sporadically found on other Cycladic islands, but plantings remain extremely limited and scattered, often among other vines (field blends). It is considered a variety under discovery. There are no organized large-scale vineyards yet, making its wine a rare, 'collectible' find.
