Vostilidi
Introduction
Vostilidi (also known as Vostilidi or Goustolidi) is an exceptionally interesting, rare white Greek grape variety, which thrives mainly in the Ionian Islands, particularly in Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Although it was traditionally used for the production of sweet or oxidative wines (such as Vertamea), it is now gaining the interest of winemakers for the creation of modern, single-varietal dry wines.
Tasting Notes
Wines made from Vostilidi are characterized by: High acidity, which imparts freshness. Earthy and mineral character, highlighting the terroir. Aromas of yellow fruits (ripe pear, quince), citrus, as well as hints of nuts or honey when aged. Full body and a slightly astringent sensation in the mouth (due to the phenolics of the variety), making it ideal for vinification using the orange wine method.
Gastronomy
Due to its high acidity and full body, Vostilidi is an excellent wine for the table. It pairs ideally with: Fatty fish (grilled or baked). Seafood and shellfish. Traditional dishes of the Ionian cuisine (e.g., Kefalonian meat pie or cod pie). White meats with lemon sauces. Mature, hard cheeses.
Terroir
It is a vigorous and productive variety, resistant to diseases. It ripens relatively late (usually by mid to late September). It thrives mainly in the Ionian Islands, particularly in Kefalonia and Zakynthos.
