Zakynthino
Introduction
Zakynthino is one of the most enigmatic and high-quality white varieties of the Ionian Islands. Despite its name, which refers to Zakynthos, the variety has found its true 'home' and highest expression in the vineyards of Kefalonia. It is a variety with great personality, often compared in dynamism to Assyrtiko, due to its high acidity and mineral character.
Tasting Notes
Color: Straw yellow with intense golden highlights. Aromas: A complex palette of white-fleshed fruits (pear, unripe peach), citrus notes, wet stone, and with aging, hints of nuts and honey. Palate: Rich and full, with 'electric' acidity that pierces the palate. The finish is long, salty, and extremely refreshing.
Gastronomy
Seafood & Fish: Large grilled fish, lobster pasta, or seafood with intense lemon sauces. Local Cuisine: Kefalonian meat pie or cod pie. Poultry: Oven-baked chicken with potatoes and rosemary.
Terroir
Region: Although cultivated in Zakynthos, Kefalonia (specifically the area of Paliki and the slopes of Ainos) is where Zakynthino yields the most impressive results. Terroir: It loves limestone, rocky soils. The variety's ability to 'translate' the soil into the glass is unique, offering an intense sense of minerality. Result: Wines with structure, nerve, and a crystalline clarity that makes them exceptionally age-worthy.
