Fragospito Winery
Intro
Fragospito Winery, located in Vorrias Monofatsiou in Heraklion, is a living example of Cretan winemaking evolution. Its name derives from an old, half-ruined farmhouse (fragospito) that stands among the vineyards, symbolizing the connection between the past and the present. Under the guidance of Nikos Gavalas, the winery has become synonymous with organic cultivation and the promotion of Crete's unique terroir.
Estate
The Gavalas family's history in viticulture begins in 1906, when great-grandfather Emmanouil planted the first vines and used traditional Minoan carved presses. The year 2001 marked a milestone with the transition to organic cultivation, and in 2004, a modern, vertically integrated winemaking facility was established in the heart of the vineyards. Today, the estate continues the tradition of four generations, and since 2022, its white and rosé wines have also received official VEGAN certification.
Vineyards
The privately owned vineyards cover approximately 300 stremmas in the Vorrias area, at an altitude of about 400 meters. The microclimate of the area is ideal for the development of both indigenous and international varieties. Among the white varieties, Vilana, Vidiano, Malvasia, and Moschato Spinas dominate, while Kotsifali and Mandilari are prominent among the reds. Additionally, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are successfully cultivated. A distinctive practice of the estate is night harvesting, which ensures the collection of grapes at low temperatures to preserve their aromas.
Tourism
The winery is open to visitors and offers a comprehensive wine tourism experience in the Heraklion hinterland. Visitors have the opportunity to tour the vineyards and production facilities, learn about traditional and modern winemaking methods, and participate in tastings in a specially designed area. The hospitality of the Gavalas family provides an authentic introduction to the Cretan vineyard, combining a love for the land with the high quality of the wines produced.
