Domaine Porto Carras
Intro
Domaine Porto Carras is located on the Sithonia peninsula (Neos Marmaras, Halkidiki) overlooking the Aegean Sea.
Estate
Founded by Yiannis Carras in the 1960s, with the first plantings in 1965–1966 and the winery's operation starting in 1970. Its architecture was designed by the team of Walter Gropius (Bauhaus), and the Slopes of Meliton area received the PDO certification in 1982. Globally recognized as a pioneer in organic vineyards and the promotion of Greek varieties. Over 70 international awards in top competitions.
Vineyards
- The largest single organic vineyard in Greece (~475 ha) and one of the largest in Europe. - Limestone soils, at an altitude of 200–300 meters, with a sea breeze and low yields (~800 kg/stremma). - Pioneer in the promotion of Malagouzia and Limnio, and introduced Cabernet Sauvignon to Greece. - Equipped with modern presses, temperature-controlled tanks, and oak barrels that are systematically renewed. Varieties: - White: Malagouzia, Assyrtiko, Athiri, Roditis, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Muscat of Alexandria - Red: Limnio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Cinsault, etc. Labels: - Château Porto Carras PDO – among the first Greek Cabernet Sauvignons. - Grande Reserve Porphyrogenitos – aged 24 months in barrel and capable of aging up to 15 years in the bottle.
Tourism
- Open to visitors daily by appointment. - Melissanthi Wine Tasting Room with free entry. - Includes tastings, tours of the vineyards and winery, as well as special thematic programs. - From 2025, infrastructure upgrades are planned (tasting hall, sustainable wine tourism practices).
