Moschato Spinas
Introduction
Moschato Spinas is a distinct clone of Moschato Aspro, named after the small village of Spina in the Chania region. Although it remained a hidden local treasure for years, in the last decade it has become one of the most sought-after white varieties of Crete, winning over wine enthusiasts with its finesse and elegance.
Tasting Notes
- Color: Pale lemon with bright greenish highlights. - Aromas: An elegant combination of flowers (jasmine, chamomile, night-blooming jasmine) and fruits (apricot, melon, grape), complemented by a subtle herbal note (mint or sage). - Palate: Light to medium body, with balanced acidity and a finish that leaves a sense of freshness and purity.
Gastronomy
Due to its aromatic yet refined profile, it is ideal for: - Cretan Cuisine: Perfectly pairs with hortokalitsouna, sfakianopita with honey, and salads with fresh herbs. - Light Dishes: Fresh shellfish, fish carpaccio, and dishes with asparagus. - Aperitif: Enjoyable on its own at the beginning of a meal or with fruit salads.
Terroir
- Terroir: Although it originated in Chania, it has adapted exceptionally well throughout Crete (especially in Heraklion). It prefers semi-mountainous soils with elevation, where the temperature is cooler. - Climate: Requires good ventilation to protect its sensitive skin. The coolness of the night in the mountains of Crete is essential to "lock in" its aromas. - Result: A wine with a strong personality, managing to be both aromatically rich and tastefully light.
