Moschato Alexandrias
Introduction
Although its origin is speculated to be from North Africa (hence the name), Moschato Alexandrias is closely associated with the island of Lemnos (PDO Lemnos and PDO Moschato Lemnos). It is a variety that loves warmth and light, offering wines with a strong personality and inimitable aromas.
Tasting Notes
Color: Bright golden yellow (in sweet wines) or pale lemon (in dry wines). Aromas: A symphony of orange blossom, fresh grape, peach, apricot, and notes of honey or rose Turkish delight. Palate: Rich and full-bodied. In its dry version, it is refreshing with moderate acidity, while in the sweet version, it is viscous, velvety, and exceptionally concentrated.
Gastronomy
Dry: Asian cuisine (sushi, curry), intensely aromatic dishes with ginger or lemongrass, and seafood. Sweet: Fruit desserts, apricot tarts, traditional syrupy sweets, and strong blue cheeses (Stilton, Gorgonzola). Aperitif: Ideally served on its own at the beginning or end of a meal.
Terroir
In Lemnos, the variety is cultivated in volcanic soils, which are rich in minerals but poor in organic matter. These soils help the grape develop a unique minerality that balances its intense aromatic character. The island is characterized by low altitude and very strong northern winds. These winds protect the vines from moisture and diseases, while the intense sunshine aids in the concentration of sugars, essential for sweet wines.
